Why maintain at all
An artificial tree avoids the big horticultural costs — water, fertiliser, pruning, pest control, seasonal replacement. What it does collect is dust, and in busy interiors that dulls the foliage and reads as "tired". A light, regular clean is the whole job for most installs, and it protects the investment for the full service life.
Routine dusting
For most trees, a soft feather duster, a microfbre cloth, or low-pressure compressed air from a safe distance handles weekly or monthly dust. Work top-down so debris falls away from already-cleaned leaves. For trees under 3 m this is a one-person task with a step stool.
Deeper cleaning of the foliage
Leaves are typically moulded ABS or PU. Both tolerate a mild neutral detergent in water and a soft microfibre cloth. Wipe, do not scrub. For sticky residues (kitchen grease, adhesive haze), a slightly stronger neutral solution works — then rinse with clean water on a cloth and dry.
Avoid solvent-based cleaners, bleach, and abrasive pads. They can cloud or strip the foliage's matte finish and, on fire-rated foliage, may interfere with the treatment. When in doubt, test on a hidden leaf first.
Large atriums and access
Trees above roughly 3 m need a plan for access before a deep clean: a scissor lift, scaffolding, or a trained abseil team depending on the space. Because large trees use a steel-core skeleton, branches are stable to work around — but never hang tools or weight from the canopy. Schedule deep cleans during low-traffic hours and confirm the base and fixings are secure first.
Outdoor trees and UV upkeep
Outdoor-grade foliage is UV-stabilised — outdoor grade carries about a 3-year colour-fastness warranty, premium outdoor grade up to 5 years. Upkeep is mostly a periodic rinse to remove pollution and salt spray, plus a visual check of the steel-core base, fixings and any anchoring. If a panel or branch is damaged, sectional large trees can often be partially disassembled for repair or swap rather than replaced whole.

- Do not use pressure washers at close range — they can tear foliage and force water into joints.
- Do not apply solvents, bleach or abrasive cleaners to the leaves.
- Do not hang signage or loads from branches or trunk.
- Do not skip the base check on outdoor trees — stability is structural, not cosmetic.
